Griffith Park Zoo Hike – Los Angeles, CA

Griffith Park was once home to the Los Angeles Zoo. Who knew? Definitely not me before I heard about this awesome hike! The Griffith Park Zoo was the second zoo to be opened in Los Angeles, the first being opened in 1885 in the city of Eastlake. It opened in 1912 with a total of 15 animals, and was built with just $2,000. This led to inadequate cages and veterinary services for the animals. Year after year, citizens became increasingly unhappy with the quality of the zoo and threatened to have it closed. It was not until 1958 that the city passed an $8 million bond to build a new zoo. The Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. The new zoo opened just 2 miles away in November of 1966. Many of the exhibits and cages were left as ruins, and nearly ½ a century later…
